| We
stayed at "The Cabin"
near the Willow Flowage and
were going to start out from
Squirrel Lake.
The
start of the trip should have
come as no surprise. Tomba slid
on some black ice with the truck
on
the way to Squirrel Lake and
spun into the ditch throwing
both rental sleds off the trailer
into the ditch,
damaging
the trailer. It happened right
by a place that could repair
the trailer, so we started
out
from there on our snowmobiles
to meet up with everyone else
at Squirrel Lake.
Our
destination that night was to
be the famous town of Hurley.
We stopped in Mercer for lunch
and a few
drinks.
This was the first and last
year drinking and driving were
mixed. We ran into a friend
at the bar,
"Crazy
Jim L." After too many
pitchers of beer we left and
then the speed increased on
the trail.(Bad)
Trail
17 from Mercer to Hurley was
in bad shape. Nothing but bumps.
With
the 368 Skidoo all I could do
was give it full throttle to
try and keep up.
Once
we got to Hurley we got our
rooms and then went to a couple
of bars downtown.
The
next day we stopped for breakfast
at the "Pea Patch"
in Manitowish Waters.
Things
got a little out of hand and
the waitress wouldn't finish
serving us.
It
had alot to do with the greasy
napkins McIver was tossing on
the table.
When
we paid for breakfast the bar
bill was 3 times the size of
the food bill. (Also bad)
Bob
lost part of his ski but I saw
it and picked it up. McIver
als lost his pack, which I also
picked up.
The
ride back to Squirrel Lake was
uneventful except when Tomba
took down a couple of saplings
and fell
off
his machine. 200 yards from
our destination at Squirrel
Lake Bob took a corner and rolled
his machine.
His
story of what happened and the
real story of what happened
were different but I won't go
into
that. We spent an hour or so
tweaking Bob's Yamaha and Tomba's
Polaris from the mishaps.
Then
we took the back trails to "The
Cabin." The thing that
stands out in my mind about
the Mexican game
that
night was when someone accidently
grabbed Bob's beer can and it
was filled with water?
He
denied it but the rest of us
knew the truth. |
