Snowmobiling the U.P. 2003

February 2003 Snowmobile Trip
"The Crew"
Judge, Mechanic, Chef, Diamond Duke,Tomba, McIver and Eddy.
The webmaster and his two brothers and some friends went on their 8th annual snowmobile trip to the U.P.
of Michigan. The ride up was pretty uneventful, except for a flat tire on one of the snowmobile trailers.
The temperature was 20° below when the tire went out. Thanks to "The Diamond Duke" we were able to change
the flat. "Tomba and The Judge" kept the vehicles warm and running while the others did the work. I would have
to say "Eddy and the Mechanic" did the most work.
When we reached the Country Inn in Ishpeming in the wee hours of the morning of Feb. 6 we met up with
"McIver" who drove in from Minnesota. Since we didn't havea kitchen in the room "The Chef" couldn't
prepare any food.
The next morning we set out for Grand Marais which was about 170 miles away. The farther east we headed
the more snow there was. The trails were in excellent shape. We stopped for lunch near Buckhorn and
had a good lunch. We know that drinking and snowmobiling don't mix, so we wait till night to have a few.
There seemed to be alot of snowmobilers out on the trails, probably because the conditions were great.
I would have to say the condition of the trails were some of the best we have ridden over the years.
We reached the "North Shore Lodge" in Grand Marais a little before dark. We put on about 165 miles.
Once we were settled into our rooms we all moved to one room for the annual dice game of "21" or
"Mexican" as it is more commonly known as. I won't get into specifics but I don't participate in the
game because I am "The Hanging Judge." I have to decide if there are any violations during the game
and hand out the punishment, which consists of Mad Dog (MD 20-20), among other varieties.
Later we had some GREAT pizza at the only place in town to eat.
The next morning we started our journey back to Ishpeming. The only real problem we had was when
the Arctic Cat the"Duke" was driving stopped running and we had to tow it about 15 miles to the
nearest road. We still made it back to Ishpeming before dark.
We are already discussing plans for next year.
