Canoeing the Platte River,
Wisconsin
If you paddled the Grant River, you’ve
had a good preview of the Platte.
Paralleling the Grant a few miles
to the east in the unglaciated southwestern
corner of the state, the 46-mile long
Platte follows a similarly crooked
path, caroming off one bluff after
another on its way to the Mississippi.
It has few of the dramatic rock formations
found along the Grant, but is otherwise
comparable. Filled with riffles, its
small, clear, peaceful and pleasant.
Along the banks, wooded bluffs, bankside
pastures, and cultivated fields are
common, but houses are few.
