Canoeing the Grant River,
Wisconsin
One of the most delightful paddling
rivers in the state, the Grant winds
circuitously between the hills of
the rugged Driftless Area in southwestern
Wisconsin. A small stream, only 25-40
feet wide most of the time, it provides
a joyous experience of canopied foliage,
striking rock formations, pleasant
riffles, and unbroken solitude. Appropriate
for advanced beginners, the Grant
has many sharp turns with tricky currents
and eddies, together with trees and
limbs that ocasionally require maneuvering.
Relatively remote from the state's
population centers, this beautiful
stream isn't heavily canoed, but once
you've paddled it, you will definitely
want to return.
