Canoeing the Des Plaines River, Wisconsin

An eminently historic river that once comprised part of an important and much traveled canoe route from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi, this river now travels through one of the most intensely urbanized areas in the Midwest. From Pleasant Prairie in Wisconsin, paddlers can head south for more than 30 river miles before encountering the first of a series of dams. Along the way the river is small, winding, and densely wooded.

Expert paddler Mike Svob has been canoeing and kayaking the rivers of the Midwest for 30 years. He paddled more than a thousand miles to complete these books. Below are brief descriptions of the canoe trips that Mike goes into detail with in his books with maps. The maps are very useful, showing rapids, take in and take out points and other things of interest.
