Canoeing the Black River, Wisconsin

  
Expert paddler Mike Svob has been canoeing and kayaking the rivers of the Midwest for 30 years. He paddled more than a thousand miles to complete these books. The maps are very useful, showing rapids, take in and take out points and other things of interest.

Black River- Hwy. 64 in Taylor County to Bridge Rd. in Clark County.12.4 miles.The best canoeing portion of the Upper Black lies west of Medford. This day trip is suitable for beginners, with a few tight spots. It winds through a remote area that is mostly wooded and lowland, with many islands.Camping is not available on this stretch of the river. Water levels are best in spring.For info on water levels call the DNR station in Medford. 715-748-4955 Put in at the Hwy. 64 bridge near County DD.Take out downstream left at Bridge Rd. Another take out point is at the County X bridge west of Withee which adds about 5 miles to the trip.
